Winter 2011

Best wishes to you and yours for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

As usual, we hope this newsletter finds all of you happy and healthy! The following is a summary of our chapters meetings, events, etc. since the last newsletter so that you’re updated on whats going on with your PF Chapter.

The 4th Annual PF Adult Fun Shoot was held May 14th at Doug Paris’ Lodge and, for the first time ever, it didn’t rain. It was well attended and as usual, we all had a great time and lunch! Thanks again Doug for hosting this event!

A Big “THANK YOU” goes out to Chet Zorn, owner of the Lighthouse Café & Pizzeria in North Webster for again donating the profit from their annual Easter Basket Raffle, to our chapter! Lets show our appreciation by frequenting his fine establishment!

Our heart felt sympathy went out to the family of Carl Wilkison from Goshen, who passed away in May. Instead of flowers, the family asked friends and family to donate to our chapter youth programs which many did generously. Thanks again Mrs. Wilkison!

As usual, the bulk of our meetings in July and August were devoted to the many decisions that need to be made for our Annual Banquet in September (and there are lots). If you have any suggestions, complaints, etc. start attending our monthly meetings. Pray tell, we would love to see your smiling face there and get your input!

On September 3rd, we assisted with the DNR’s Annual Youth Dove Hunt. 15 kids from the conservation camp participated in this event. We paid for their hunting license and helped out with other expenses.

A BIG PF Thank You goes out to Steve Carson! He spends countless hours working to make our chapter successful! This year (August and September especially) he spent a zillion hours battling with the State Gaming Commission to get our Gaming License for the banquet. It was close, but obviously he got it!

On September 17th we held our Annual Banquet at the North Webster Community Center. Attendance was down from last year (too many other things going on), but we still did well financially! A fun night was had by all that attended! Next years banquet will be on September 16th – Mark your calendar now!

The Monday following our banquet we learned that Bob Caveny, our Regional Representative, had resigned. So again we are without a representative.

The Annual Youth Fun Day was held November 5th, again at the “Back 40” – what a great place. Approximately 60 kids attended and they had a ball! This year we eliminated a few things so that they could shoot twice as many clays which is what they love to do. During the lunch break we did a drawing for the 8 youths that get to participate in the December 3rd pheasant hunt on DNR land. It was a sunny day in all ways!

We will again be having a “Youth Ice Fishing Day” early in 2011. It was well received last year so we’ve decided to make an annual event! We will let all know when a date and location has been determined.

And now a few words from Mr. Habitat, Dick Wells:

Hi Friends,

Since we are seeing our first snow of the season today, I haven’t been thinking too much about habitat. I have ordered some food plot seed. It will arrive in time for spring planting. In the past, I have tried to keep some warm season grass seed on hand. This year I think I will direct everyone to the central Indiana chapter of PF. They have an extensive seed program in place. I will eliminate myself as a middle man. I was never able to have the correct mix on hand. When you call them you can order the exact mix that you require. You must order early however. If you wait until the last minute, you might be disappointed.

The drill is still in good working order and the rental will remain the same as last year. Last spring was very wet and most of the planting was late. Some people wasted their wildflower seed by planting too late. The wildflowers are very expensive. It’s a shame to waste your money. Sunflowers should be planted in mid April if possible. Sorgums are best if planted later after the soil is warmed completely. Some of the bird and buck mixes should be planted early so that they are mature for deer season.

Enjoy the rest of the hunting season and take a youngster out if you have a chance.

Thanks,

Dick Wells

And last, but certainly not least, a word or two from our leader, Steve Carson:

Well, another year is past and hunting season is half over. I would like to thank everyone that helped out with all of our events this year. If it wasn’t for you folks we could not reach out and touch the community. It’s good to see some new faces wanting to join in – we can always use more volunteers.

Our youth fun day at the Back Forty Sporting Clays was a great success this year! We had around 60 kids show up. We held a clay pigeon shoot, a cowboy shoot and a dog demonstration. Thank you Cutter’s Raider Cowboys (Troy Heler) and Charlie and Rick Baker for helping us out! We held a drawing to take 8 kids on a Pheasant hunt on December 3, 2011 at Tri-County FWA. We have 8 guys coming with their dogs to hunt with these kids.

Our next big kids event is the Youth Ice Fishing day! Last year was a fun time for all and this year we hope to make it even better! This year we can have a BIG BON FIRE and cook some chili for lunch. Anyone that wants to help with this contact me or our new and up coming Youth Chairmen, Rick Hurley! Thanks Rick for stepping in!
